Downloading and Installing SAV

Symantec Anti-Virus is provided to all Northeastern Students. We strongly recommend installing this software on Windows machines prior to arriving on campus. If you're currently using another Anti-Virus solution you should check the remaining length of your subscription and assure that the software will continue to receive updates. If your subscription is coming to an end you should consider switching to the school's Anti-Virus program which guarantees that you will receive free updates while you attend Northeastern.

Note: Northeastern does not currently provide anti-virus software for Mac OSX. Currently, the virus threat against OSX is very minimal, and students connected to ResNet should not expect to experience virus infections. We are working on a future release of Symantec Anti-Virus of OSX. Students running Windows on Apple computers should download and install SAV for Windows.

Downloading Symantec Anti-Virus
CAUTION: Be certain that old anti virus products are completely uninstalled before installing the Northeastern-provided anti virus softeware.

1. Login into http://myneu.neu.edu

2. Click on the "Self-Service" tab
   

3. Select "Software Downloads"
   

4. From here a popup window will appear with various things that can be downloaded. Select either "Symantec Antivirus XP (Windows)" or "Symantec Antivirus Vista (Windows)" depending on whether you're running Windows XP or Windows Vista. Click "continue" once you've made your selection.

5. Now read and accept the license agreement.

6. The next screen you will see gives you the options of "Norton Antivirus XP/Vista 32 Bit", "Norton Antivirus XP/Vista 64 Bit", and "Install Documentation". Select either the 32 Bit or 64 Bit version based on whether you're running 32 Bit Windows or 64 Bit Windows. If you are unsure, select the 32 Bit version. Once you have made your selection, click continue.
   

7. Read the Readme on the next page and then click the download button.

8. Enter your MyNEU username and password when prompted.

9. Your computer will now download the antivirus program.

Installing Symantec Anti-Virus

1. Now that you have downloaded Symantec you should disconnect from the internet.

2. Once this is done, if you have another antivirus program already installed, uninstall it. Having multiple antivirus programs running at the same time can significantly slow down and disrupt the performance of your computer.

3. Now, run the program that you downloaded earlier.

4. Click Run if you are given a security warning, then click Ok in the Software Authorization window that appears and finally click Setup in the last window.
   
   

5. Once you have clicked Setup, follow the installer wizard that appears. You should not need to change any options, just continue to click next when prompted.
